It's Almost Auction Time!!

SFUU Foothills Fiesta- Here's how it works!

Our first-time-in-4-years-in-person-auction-dinner-dancing event is almost here!! On Saturday, May 5th we will gather in beloved community and F-U-N-D-raise for SFUU and have a blast in the process.  So pull your "festive-fancy-fun outfits" out of the closet, raid the piggybank, grab your checks or credit cards, and put your dancing shoes on! Let's have fun!

The Spring Fiesta is a party and fundraiser
for the SFUU community.
There are 2 parts.

1. An Auction!
There will be an online (only) auction starting Sunday, April 28th  after church.
The online auction bidding will end May 4th at noon.
Items that were offered with no bids will go into the silent auction at the Foothills Fiesta Party where the silent auction will continue in person. There will be silent auction bid sheets at the party for these items. The silent auction will have different items than the online auction so you will want to participate in both.

2. A Party!!
The in-person auction/dinner/dancing party will be on May 4th.
The Foothill Fiesta will go from 5-9PM
The event will be at St Luke’s episcopal Church (123 Orange St.- 2 blocks from SFUU)
There will be a taco dinner, music, and dancing and more auction fun including raffles!

What can you do?
Last chance to donate auction items (today and tomorrow!)
Buy a ticket.
Tickets are $15 and include 1 complimentary beverage. You can buy tickets before or after church.

(children under 12 are free)

To buy tickets, donate items or peruse the catalog follow the link below! You won't want to miss this super fun event!!

S.A.G.E. Presents:
Our next Book Group Discussion
May 1st 4:00-5:30pm

Are women monsters? NO!!! But ancient mythology, religious traditions and literary themes over the centuries have influenced disparaging views of women and perpetuated the patriarchy. Please join us for a lively discussion about building a new mythology based on awareness of harmful ideas and beliefs of the past. Come on men!!! We want and need you to participate!

"To Flower"

Greetings of Peace Beloved Sibling,

I'll limit my note this week to inviting you to stop and smell the roses.
Power-holding humans are fucking up big time, but Mother Nature continues to bless us with reasons to "keep on keeping on." So, Let us keep charging forward, and may we allow ourselves to stop to smell every miracles flower on the way.

“I think it pisses God off
if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere
and don't notice it.
People think pleasing God is all God cares about.
But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”

~Alice Walker, "The Color Purple"

May all beings be free from suffering and the root of suffering.
May all beings find peace and the root of peace.
And... may we exercise every ounce of power we have to make this world a better place.

In lovingkindness and deep gratitude,

🙏🏽🍉 🙇🏽‍♂️ 🦋🕊🙏🏽

Rev. Alex

  Joys + Sorrows + Gratitude

Each week we lift up the sorrows, the joys and the gratitude of those
in our community, and in our world at large.

Meg Dorsey shares several wonderful life joys! She walked her precious daughter Maria, down the ails, at her wedding the the kind and wonderful Cheldon.  The next day, Meg flew to India to meet her 4 day old granddaughter Frankie! The little family is doing well.  Bonus joy! Indianapolis was in the zone of totality for amazing cloud free eclipse. Lastly Meg is so grateful for her new KNEE!!! She has so immensely grateful for all the medical care and friends supporting her through post-op and helping her back to mobility and health!

Carol Koons share her exuberant joy at celebrating the opening weekend of Legally Blonde where Sam Florence gave an incredible performance. Lots of love to director Hank Florence. Congratulations on a great show!

Brian and Janet Hansen ask for your thoughts and loving prayers for their friend of 60 years who is in the hospital with Parkinson's Disease.

Please keep Kia Hatch, Bob Coombs, and Geoff Smith in your healing meditation, positive thoughts, and prayers.

Folks are excited for the "Some Kind of Earth Day Festival" coming up next Saturday, April 27th from 10-5

Joy and celebration over the announcement of a new grandbaby for the Couto family!

We hold all our joys and sorrows and gratitude in love, and appreciate your sharing so that we may walk with you during those times you are in celebration or in need .

If you have a Joy or Sorrow or Gratitude to share you are invited to write it in the Joys and Sorrows book before or after. Your joys and sorrows are shared on Sundays and in the weekly ebeacon. Please be sure you have permission when you share news of someone other than yourself, as we do share this information publicly. You may also email at any time to:

 CYRE News

Sunday - April 28 - CYRE

This month the children will be exploring our 7th principle supporting a service project they have selected to put what they learn, into practice!

Contact: Joan Harris - dre@mysfuu.org

April 24, 2024

While the children are completing their school years, we are also winding down with the children in the CYRE program. In doing so, we are concluding the church year in RE with a service project focused on the 7th principle.
Given our desire to live the principles and our commitment to the respect for the interdependent web of life, the children and youth easily connected this principle to how we humans relate to animals and how important it is to help animals in need. As a way of helping animals in need, we are going to help a local animal shelter. To help raise funds to purchase food for the shelter, we started making dog treats and want to make some jewelry and some cards to sell at the RE led Sunday service in June. Please bring your child(ren) to Sunday service so they can help in
this endeavor. We also want to collect towels and blankets for the shelter, so please check your linen closets
for possible items to be donated. Once we have concluded collecting these items, we plan to visit Cat’s Animal Rescue and Shelter to bring the donated items and help with a work day. Please continue to follow the
e-beacon for updates on progress and future dates to visit this Colfax non-profit.
In peace,
Joan Harris

Meet Rev. Sangye Hawke
Rev. Sangye's contract with SFUU will begin on Sept. 1, 2024.

It is with great pleasure that your Board of Trustees and the Search Committee announce our new contract minister – Rev. Sangye Hawke!

Reverend Sangye Hawke's journey weaves through diverse paths of education, motherhood, spirituality, and activism. A graduate of the progressive UnitarianUniversalist Seminary, Starr King School for the Ministry in Oakland, Sangye began her academic journey at UC Berkeley, graduating at an impressive age of 20. While raising her two daughters as a stay-at-home mother, Sangye also received the Bodhisattva Vow in Karma Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism, became a Martial Arts instructor, and a historic cemetery preservationist in the city of Santa Cruz, California. It was in Santa Cruz that Sangye's call to Unitarian Universalist ministry emerged, uncovering hidden narratives of Unitarian ancestry and activism in California's past. After earning her Master of Divinity in early 2021, she was ordained by two historically significant congregations in California— the Unitarian Universalist Society of Sacramento and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Santa Cruz County. Sangye proudly identifies as BIPOC and is an active chaplain and member of Diverse & Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM), contributing to the spiritual diversity and social transformation within her community.

Rev. Sangye currently lives in Davis and will continue to reside there.  However, she will spend significant time in Auburn with us.  In addition to Sundays, she will be available for pastoral care and key on-site church operational needs.

Many of you may remember Rev. Sangye from a few visits to SFUU last year.  A dedicated Buddhist, Rev. Sangye’s calm presence left an impression on many of us.  From our conversations with her, we know she’ll be dedicated to enriching our caring committee, deepening our relationship with Unitarian Universalism, and participating in the revival of a strong Committee on Ministry (COM).

Our nominating committee is looking for members who are interested in serving on either the COM or our Board.  Please contact Hank Florence or Marsha von Dessonneck for more information or to submit your name.

Rev. Sangye is excited about SFUU and sees what a vibrant community we are.  She told us many times during our conversations, “You are awesome.”  We welcome you to participate in building our future.

PECA Presents:
Thoughts on Earth and Facts on Climate Change

May 5, 1:15 pm

Let’s separate the climate-denier’s playbook from the basic science-based realities about our changing climate on Earth.  What’s seriously important and what’s political hyperbole?  Given these simple realities, let’s work backwards and discuss how climates have changed over time and, more importantly, how our one and only planet Earth has evolved to synchronize with the present climatological condition.  Why should we be concerned? What do we stand to lose? How can we help and what can we do? Joe is Emeritus Professor of Biology at Sierra College.  He spent more than 40 years teaching botany, ecology and environmental studies while leading countless natural history field trips from California to Africa.  The proud grandfather of three, he believes we can NOT give up on them and all future generations to which we owe a clean, healthy and just future.

When: Sunday May 5, 1:15pm
Where: Auburn Congregational Church (Fireside Room)
located at 710 Auburn Ravine Rd

(OR click here for zoom information for PECA Presents - please be aware that PECA tries their best, but have had some technical issues trying to present a good zoom experience for these speaker events - if you can come in person that would be the better option)

PECA is an interfaith partnership of Placer County Faith Communities (including SFUU) concerned about our climate crisis.
