Empowerment for Rapidly Changing Times (using Nonviolent Communication). October 4, 2026 - 10:00am
Please welcome Nora Heiber and her reflections on the importance of Non Violent Communications. Nora is a Senior Negotiator for the American Guild of Musical Artists, driven by a vision to blend compassion and kindness with power and influence. A non-adversarial approach to negotiating collective bargaining agreements for performing artists—one rooted in empathy, connection, authenticity and courage was not easily found in the innately adversarial culture of union negotiating. Nora will share her experience with Nonviolent Communication (NVC) by Marshall Rosenberg as a foundation for effective conflict resolution. Along with CNVC Certified Trainer Aya Caspi, and Nora founded Reclaiming Life, a project offering NVC training to individuals and groups worldwide. Today Nora offers mediation services privately and through the Conflict Resolution Center of Nevada County, where she now serves as a board member and volunteer as part of their court program.

UPDATE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Last spring, SFUU lost its building and liability insurance. Our treasurer, Roke Whitson, was successful in finding us new insurance, that is only about 10% higher than the previous policy. In the current insurance landscape, that’s a win. During the process of seeking insurance, one of the brokers we were working with suggested we get an inspection of our electrical system by a licensed electrician in case it was required by insurance. As you can imagine in a 100-year-old building, there are some issues with our electrical system that require attention. We are getting at least 3 quotes and input from other electricians on how we can improve the safety of our electrical system. We should have those quotes in 2-3 weeks. Watch for another update from the board. Our excellent visioning team of Amy Hansen, Maureen Bauman and Marsha von Dessonneck have made great progress on many of the goals the congregation set for them last winter. They will be scheduling a meeting in the next couple of months to provide us with an update on their activities.

Pumpkin Painting! Saturday - October 3 - 3:00pm Calling all SFUU families of children and youth! We are painting pumpkins again. The Badertscher family is opening their home again to host a pumpkin painting party. Bring a snack to share while we paint Halloween-themed pumpkins. Upcoming Fundraising Event and Party! Your Help Needed! Your Fundraising team is hard at work getting ready for our Fall Fundraiser and Party -- Harvesting Our Dreams! We are building holiday baskets, as well as other themed baskets, for the raffle at the event. If you have lightly used, good condition baskets – please bring them to the all-church picnic on September 27th. We would also welcome donations of services, small pieces of art, jewelry pieces or other beautiful items for holidays, giving, etc. The team will work their magic to transform these into holiday must-haves for you, your friends, or family.
