A Legacy Project at SFUU

SFUU has had a long partnership with the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, both through donations (an annual share-the-plate recipient) and volunteerism. The vision of AIFC is that all people in our service area will have access to nutritious food.  Thus, the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet uses donations to provide groceries to anyone who is food insecure and needs help, preserving their dignity and encouraging self-reliance. You can learn more about the food closet by visiting their web page and by reading their 2019-2022 Annual Report.

The Food Closet provides opportunities for you to serve the community through their volunteer program. They are a wide variety of options for how to help and any time you have to give is most appreciated. Click here to learn more about volunteering at AIFC.

Donating to the Food Closet

Donations are gratefully received in cash, by check payable to: AIFC – Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, or by any other means through this link. Also, remember that AIFC is a share-the-plate recipient at SFUU, many thanks for your generosity during Sunday offerings!

Volunteer Needs at the Food Closet

With rising food prices and the stoppage of the SNAP program during the government shut down, more people than ever are depending on the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet to help feed their families.  Volunteers are urgently needed!   There are a variety of jobs available but one key need is for people who will work shifts at the facility – processing donations and filling orders for guests who come in.  Shifts are from 9:30-2:30 and you can commit to as little as 2 days a month.  It’s rewarding work, you’ll be on your feet and will get your daily steps in!    Of course, there are other jobs available – some that you can even do from home.   To get started, fill out the volunteer application form on the Food Closet web site (How to Volunteer) and be sure to complete the short online training.  Laurie Soper will be in touch to answer your questions and help you find just the right job for you.

The Food Closet also has purchased its own own refrigerated truck, which allows the Homebound Delivery initiative to continue to grow. However the growth of this program is now limited by a need for more volunteer Packers and Driver/Navigators. If anyone is called to help the hungry in our area, this is a great opportunity to make a difference. If working with this initiative is not your bag there are a variety of other volunteer opportunities at AIFC. To volunteer in any capacity, please contact Laurie Soper.

AIFC Community Turkey Drive

Share generously for the holidays by donating a turkey for Thanksgiving to a family in need living in the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet service area. You can show your generosity in three possible ways:

  1. Donate on-line to the AIFC virtual Thanksgiving Drive.

  2. Purchase a 10-14 lb frozen turkey in Auburn at either SaveMart or Grocery Outlet. They will handle getting it to the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet.

  3. Purchase a 10-14 1b frozen turkey elsewhere and deliver it to the parking lot of the Grocery Outlet on Saturday, Nov. 22 between 9am and 5pm (AIFC representatives will be set up on that day to accept deliveries).

Walk to Stock the Food Closet!

Members of SFUU gather with the larger community for a walk through town to raise money for the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet every Thanksgiving morning. It is usually a beautiful Fall day to walk joyfully with so many in support of the Food Closet. We meet up on Thanksgiving morning prior to the 9am start in the sunny spot by Tangos!
